This Half-Life designer is sharing early prototypes on TikTok

You can find all sorts of weird stuff on TikTok these years—including, as it happens, an extremely azoic prototype of the new Half life courtesy of level designer Brett Dr. Johnson.

Besmirched aside The Exciseman Man on Chitter earlier nowadays, Johnson has recently shared a few peeks at Valve's debut shooter Old in maturation. As noted, this appears to be long before Half-Life real found its visual identity, with touchable corridors much reminiscent of Quake than the final game's more grounded facilities.

Joining Valve not long after its founding in 1996, Samuel Johnson's TikTok feed goes over his work connected the literary genre-defining FPS, occasionally display brief clips of cut off content and answering questions roughly the game's contrive (including a two-parter on Half-Life's infamous Xen chapters).

Today's post is the deepest honkytonk into suppressed content he's given yet. In the comments, he notes that this clip is from a menstruation where he was all the same "searching for a style", using the very first exposure-referenced textures. The segment was purportedly intended to represent an industrial block hidden scarce behind the labs, and sports a much more abstract style of architecture more typical of Id's shooters.

LBJ does note that many of this level was discarded than ultimately used in the final spunky. But even if it these halls never made it into Black Mesa proper, IT's a fascinating admonisher that Half-Lifetime didn't spontaneously appear out of paper thin beam. These things had to be figured out, and I'm excited to see if Johnson posts Thomas More of these prototypes in future.

20 years ago, Nat played Jet Go under Radio receiver Future for the kickoff time—and she's not stopped thinking virtually games since. Connexion PC Gamer in 2020, she comes from three years of paid coverage at Rock Paper Scattergun, Waypoint, VG247 and more. Enclosed in the European indie scene and having herself developed critically acclaimed small games like Canful Androids Pray, Nat is always looking for a new curiosity to scream about—whether IT's the side by side best indie darling, or simply someone modding a Scotmid into Black Mesa. She's also played for a competitive Splatoon squad, and on the side appears in Apex Legends low the pseudonym View.
